Caving

Posted by Brian on Thursday February 15 @ 12:07 am

When Laruen asked me to go on a caving trip to Wales, I figured it would be a cheap way to travel a bit, and that the caving itself would be somewhat dull. I was totally wrong. Not about the cheapness (£35 for a full weekend including travel and food) but about the caving.

The weekend was just amazing. The caving was really quite intense, complete with climbing entirely unsafe rock faces and traversing chasms that could easily result in injury or death if we slipped up. Aiora came along with us, and she was the hit of the party… particularly her squeeze machine skills. All in all, it was one of the most enjoyable weekends I’ve had in a long time.

I’ve been somewhat negligent in uploading photos as of late… so here’s a few galleries all at once.

Snow Day
It usually snows once or twice every year in Oxford, but nothing like this… we woke up to several centimeters of snow covering the back yard. Phoenix loved it, we spent the better part of an hour playing with him in the back yard. Then I skipped the gym to climb the tower at St. Mary’s to get some photos. Oxford in the snow is one of the most beautiful sights in the world.

Toga Bop
It was a bop… people wore togas… not really much more to say. Good times all around.

Burns Night
Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.

Burns Night… Whisky… Haggis… Ceilidh dancing… always a lot of fun.

My Acting Debut… (warning, contains scenes of very realistic violence, and course language including the term “bum bag”)

I’ve just uploaded a bunch of photos from the last month. Lots of fun events, been too busy to post each event’s photos individually.

More Halloween Photos

Posted by Brian on Wednesday November 1 @ 11:36 pm

Added some more photos from the Halloween hall and bop.

My pumpkin… turned out pretty well despite the knife breaking halfway through.

My vote for best costume of the year. Don’t know what it is? –> Eagle & Child<-- highlight for answer.

Even Phoenix had a costume.

Rocky Horror & Halloween Bop

Posted by Brian on Sunday October 29 @ 6:41 pm

I finally went to see Rocky Horror in London. It wasn’t as big or as crazy as the Toronto shows, but it was still fun. It was nice to go in a different city, especially since I could just steal lines from the Toronto shows and use them in London and people just thought I was really witty & creative.

The halloween bop went really well. The place was packed, and everyone had a great time. I did a last minute devil costume, which turned out to be a less than stellar idea, in particular using water based face paint in a bar that gets insanely hot wasn’t a smart move. By the end of the night, my face was white and my shirt was red, but it was still a great evening.

Now to the dry cleaners.

Freshers’ Week & Other Fun Stuff

Posted by Brian on Monday October 16 @ 2:59 pm

Another year, another Freshers’ Week. I think St. Cross has got a really good group of incoming students this year. And if I do say so myself, we managed to put together a pretty good welcome.

We did the slow motion pub crawl again this year, a different pub every night of -1 week. The attendance was amazing, in fact almost too amazing, as by Friday we couldn’t fit into the pubs we had chosen. Everyone seemed to enjoy the events and people got along well. I still have no idea of anyone’s name, but between the pub crawl, the actual Freshers’ Week events, and working the meet & greet shifts at the front door, I think I’ve met most of the freshers.

Most of the pictures in this gallery are actually from the Superhero bop at St. John’s college. There are 2 reasons for this: 1) I was too busy during our own bop to take pictures because I was DJing and having real trouble reading the new group, so I was too busy floundering to take photos, and 2) Half of the St. John’s bop was full of St. Cross students anyway. They just sort of took over. I think Lauren should just stop having bops and simply start annexing other college’s parties… it’s much cheaper and easier that way :-)

Trip Home

Posted by Brian on Monday October 16 @ 2:50 pm

Once again I retured to Canada, and once again I had a great time. Since I have a nasty habit of not getting to see everyone when I’m home, I decided that this time around I would visit for a full month. As it turned out this was a great idea. It made everything so much less rushed. I didn’t feel like I had to schedule every minute of my time, and it actually felt like a vacation… imagine that!

In a fortunate turn of events, Jacqueline was in Toronto for the International Aids Conference, so she stayed at my parents place with me for a week. We did all the touristy stuff in Toronto, went to the Island, and even made it down to Niagra falls for the day. Good times all around.

I managed to almost completely avoid being involved in Orientation while I was home… it was weird, but I figured it was time to close that chapter of my life. 6 years in a row is enough. I did however wind up going downtown with AJ and Drew to collect the Shinerama money, and then taking it back to the school to count. I have to say that AJ did an awesome job as Shinerama chair, raising over $11,800 on Shine Day. The best part is, now UTSC Shinerama has a chair who will be around through the year, so there will hopefully be plenty more to come. I couldn’t think of anyone better to leave my record in the dust.

All in all, it was a great trip. It’s always good to go home and spend time with friends and family.

New House and New Puppy

Posted by Brian on Sunday August 6 @ 4:41 pm

Well, we’ve moved into the new house. This year I’ll be living on Mill st. with Anna, Lauren, Thad and a 5th housemate to be named later. We’ve also got our 6th housemate (6 and a half if you count Jill being here half the time) Phoenix.

The place is great, my room has a sliding door that opens onto the back yard, and we’ve got a nice big living room. Some of the pictures in this gallery are of the empty rooms, I just put them there so I can send photos to any prospective housemates.

There’s a nice little pub directly across the street, I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but on the 2nd or 3rd day we were here, we were greeted to Morris dancers on our street… interesting way to be welcomed to the neighbourhood.

Thad is away for the weekend so I’ve been looking after Phoenix, we’ve been going for walks in the cemetary just down the street and playing in the back yard quite a bit. I’m trying to finish up my transfer report, so it’s good to take breaks and play with the dog for a while when I get tired of writing.

Thad has some more photos of Phoenix up on his website.

Only a few more days until I head home… looking forward to it!
